Top Tips for Big Energy Saving Week

21 January 2026

To celebrate Big Energy Saving Week which takes place from 19-26 January, we’re sharing some of our top tips for saving energy – cutting your bills and helping the planet.

  • Turning the thermostat down by just 1oc can reduce energy use by 10%. Remember to also check your timer settings and radiator thermostats if you have them to make sure you’re not heating rooms when you’re not using them.
  • Turn off lights and equipment when you leave a room – leaving appliances like chargers, TV’s, or computers on drains energy even when on standby.
  • In the kitchen, a microwave or air fryer uses less energy than the oven, make sure you only boil as much water as you need in the kettle, and keep lids on pans when cooking.
  • Only use your washing machine when you have a full load of washing, and keep the temperature to 30oc or 20oc. Tumble dryers are very energy hungry so try and air dry washing whenever you can. Remember that if you’re drying washing on an airer (even a heated one) this will release moisture so make sure to keep the room well ventilated to avoid issues with damp and mould.

For more top tips and useful information including how to ensure you’re on the best tariff, head over to the Energy Saving Trust website, or to our own Platform Energy Advice pages.

For even more energy and water saving advice, join us at our ‘Keep Warm and Well’ event on Tuesday 27th January between 2pm – 6pm at the Trinity Centre, Louth. We’ll be joined by our partner Equans to talk about how we are retrofitting homes with upgrades like insulation, heat pumps, and solar panels, and how this can help save you money and make your home warmer and more comfortable.

We’ll also be joined by Anglian Water who will be offering advice on water saving, and their WaterCare services. They’ll help you find out if you’re eligible for any support such as their Priority Services Register or financial assistance.

Pop in for a free tea or coffee and a biscuit (or two!) and find out more on the day. Plus there will be free craft activities – bring along your little ones to have a go at pebble painting, fairy door decorating, or building a bug hotel!
