It was a difficult to decide the winner of this years Positive Change Award as part of the Community Heroes Awards and so it was shared between two deserving winners, with one announced as John Skeet from Gilmorton, Leicestershire.

This award recognises individuals who have overcome personal challenges to make a meaningful and lasting difference either in their own lives or in the lives of others. John’s journey and the positive impact he’s made on his village and beyond makes him a truly deserving winner.

Since relocating from the West Country, John has become an inspiring presence in his new community. From planting a communal herb garden for residents to enjoy, to creating a wildflower meadow through the winter months, his actions are rooted in kindness and a deep care for people and the environment. Even when facing health problems of his own, John continues to give his time and energy to help those around him.

John said: “I am truly honoured to receive this award and feel grateful to be part of such a supportive community here in Gilmorton. I’ve spent the last 50 years volunteering in one way or another, because for me, it’s all about helping others and making a positive impact wherever I can. Whether it’s caring for the environment, looking after the bees, or simply offering a chat to someone who needs it - it’s the little things that can make a big difference!”

John’s positive influence stretches beyond his village. He has also volunteered with community services in nearby Lutterworth, where his generous spirit has touched many more lives.

Cyn Brown, who nominated John for the award, said: “John hasn’t just improved the space around us, he’s brought a real warmth to our village. He’s always there with a smile and a kind word. His determination and resilience are an inspiration to us all and his kindness makes him a true hero in our community.”

Marion Duffy, Chief Operations Officer at Platform Housing Group, added: “John is a perfect example of how one person, through their generosity and care, can make a powerful impact on the local area.  His achievements, even when faced with personal health issues, are truly inspirational and what our Community Heroes Awards are all about.”

David Whitaker from Clearview, who sponsored the award, said: “Clearview Environmental Ltd proudly supports the Platform Community Heroes Awards 2025, celebrating those making a positive impact in our communities.”
