Digital Empowerment – Annie’s Story

Annie is registered low vision blind so finds digital use difficult but overcame her fear and started to attend Platform’s free Digital4Everyone sessions in Market Harborough.

Annie, an older lady is sat down holding a bill showing a reduction in cost. Peter is kneeling next to her wearing a birght multi-coloured waistcoat and hat.

Annie met our Digital Empowerment Officer Ben and she told him that she was paying £133 per month for her current package of telephone and broadband services and was having to have food parcels due to having no money.

Annie was made aware she would be eligible for a social tariff for broadband packages. Her bill included sports and entertainment packages she could not use and she assumed this was normal and that everyone paid the same. Annie said; “I never used the package I was paying for, I didn’t know anything about social tariffs, they aren’t well know or advertised, it was only because of Ben who told me I would eligible”.

After learning she was eligible for a social tariff, Annie was supported by Peter, one of our Digital Champions who made the phone call for her and Annie is now paying £12 per month.

This means:

A saving of £121 per month

A saving of £1,452 per year

Annie now has reliable broadband, unlimited data, and unlimited home phone calls too.

Annie’s reaction to this is one of the reasons Platform offers the Digital4Everyone sessions. Annie said; “I’m over the moon at the savings, it’s a huge amount of money, I’m speechless at the saving. It will give me a better quality of life. Ben and Peter are incredible people.”
