A young woman who once thought the trades weren’t for her is now helping residents stay safe and warm, thanks to a life changing apprenticeship with us.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, we are sharing the story of Caitlin Morley, whose career journey began with uncertainty but has grown into purpose and progress.

After leaving sixth form and briefly studying product design at university, Caitlin applied for the police force, only to be turned away at the final hurdle.  With no trade experience, she wasn’t sure what to do next, until her Mum spotted our Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship.

“I didn’t think it was for me at first,” Caitlin said. “But after one day working with a plumber, I loved it and got one of the two apprenticeship places.  It changed everything.”

Since joining in October 2024, Caitlin has completed her PMO qualification, picked up numerous safety accreditations and progressed to become an Apprentice Heating Engineer.  She now works on boiler installations, including for vulnerable customers.

Caitlin says that our support and culture have been key to her success.

“'I’ve never been treated differently because I’m a woman.  I’m encouraged, supported and trusted, it’s helped my confidence grow.”

She also praises our regular apprentice check ins and the stability of working hours, which allow her to enjoy evenings and weekends with her partner, something that was difficult in her previous retail job.

With ambitions to complete her Level 3 plumbing and heating qualification, and eventually take on oil based heating systems too, Caitlin is clear about her future.  “I’ve gained skills for life and a career I genuinely enjoy.  I want to encourage more women to consider apprenticeships.  I used to think this was a man’s job.  I’m glad I was wrong.”

We currently support a number of apprentices across our Property Care team and beyond, offering clear pathways into qualified roles and long term careers.  Apprenticeships play a central role in our early careers strategy and workforce development approach.
