Thinking about getting an electric vehicle?
Talk to us first so we can help you charge it safely at home
Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more popular, and we’re happy to support customers who want to make the switch.
Before you buy an EV or arrange any installation work, it’s important to apply to us first. Not all homes are suitable for a home charger, and we don’t want you to end up with a vehicle you can’t charge safely or legally.
Completing our short application form helps us check what’s possible at your home and guide you through the process.
Why you need to apply before buying an EV
We have a responsibility to make sure all EV charger installations are safe, compliant and suitable for the type of home you live in. By contacting us first, we can:
- Check whether a charger can be safely installed at your property
- Make sure all work stays within your own boundary and doesn’t affect communal areas
- Help prevent fire, trip or electrical hazards
- Ensure any installer meets the right qualifications and standards
- Make sure your EV will be practical to charge daytoday
This protects you, your neighbours, and your home.
Can your home have an EV charger?
Our policy sets out strict eligibility rules, so it’s important you know whether your home may be suitable before starting the process. If your home doesn’t meet these criteria, we won’t be able to approve an EV charger through this process.
- Houses, bungalows and maisonettes with a driveway directly attached to the home
- Houses with allocated parking that isn’t separated from the home by communal land or shared pathways

- Flats or apartments (with or without parking)
- Homes that rely on communal parking
- Homes where your parking space is separated from your home by shared or communal land

What we look at
For eligible applications, we’ll assess:
- Whether the charger and all cables stay fully within your own boundary
- Fire and electrical safety risks
- Installer qualifications and insurance
- The proposed charger type and where it will be fitted
- Any impact on neighbours or communal land
- Listed building or conservation restrictions
If anything can’t meet safety or legal requirements, we won’t be able to approve the installation.
Your responsibilities if approved
If we give consent, you will be responsible for:
- Using approved, safe equipment
- Keeping the charger maintained and in good working order
- Providing electrical safety certificates
- Leaving the charger at the property at the end of your tenancy or lease (unless unsafe)
- Covering any costs needed to make the installation safe
We also strongly recommend you have public liability insurance.
If your home isn’t eligible
If you don’t have suitable parking, you can apply separately to convert a garden area into offstreet parking, if appropriate for your home.
This must be approved before any EV charger application is considered.
