Worcester arts and crafts group receives funding to continue community work
A Worcester community arts and crafts group helping tackle loneliness and support local charities has received continued funding from our Community Chest programme.
St John’s Golden Girls Arts and Craft Group has been awarded funds to help continue its weekly sessions at Russell House in St John’s, Worcester.
The informal group brings together older residents from across the local area to take part in arts and crafts activities, socialise and support one another. Members also sell handmade items to raise money for local charities including Worcester Animal Rescue Centre and St Richard’s Hospice.
Funding will help cover the cost of craft materials and supplies throughout the year, allowing the group to continue meeting weekly and supporting the local community.
Val Mills from St John’s Golden Girls said: “The group has become so much more than an arts and crafts club. Many of us didn’t know each other before joining and we’ve built genuine friendships and a real sense of community.
“It gives people something to look forward to every week, helps reduce loneliness and keeps us active and connected. We’re incredibly grateful to Platform for continuing to support us so we can keep the group going and continue raising money for local charities.”
The group attracts residents from several housing schemes across St John’s and provides an inclusive and welcoming environment for older people to socialise, learn new skills and support their wellbeing.
Our Community Chest fund supports projects that strengthen communities, improve wellbeing and create positive opportunities for local people.
