Thanks to one of our contractor’s social value works at a community garden

We have teamed up with contractor Hardyman & Co to support a thriving community space in Matlock.

As part of its social value commitment, Hardyman & Co recently completed groundwork improvements at the Hurst Farm Farmers Community Garden, which is run by local community benefit society Wild Works.  Its work has laid the foundation for continued progress at the volunteer-run site.

Hardyman & Co carried out groundworks to prepare the sloping land for a large shed.  Once installed, the shed will provide essential shelter for staff and volunteers who maintain the garden, care for bees, repair dry stone walls and support a range of local activities.

The next stage of the project will see a second contractor laying paving slabs to support the shed installation, another contribution being made through social value.  This work will follow the completion of a retaining wall, currently being built by Wild Works volunteers, to support the sloped site.

James Smith, Divisional Manager at Hardyman & Co said: “We were really pleased to support our social value commitment.  It’s been great to work alongside Platform and Wild Works on something that clearly means a lot to the community.  Our team enjoyed getting stuck in and we’re proud to help create a space that will benefit local people for years to come.”

Lisa Newton, Business Development Manager at Wild Works said: “The support from Hardyman & Co and Platform has been a real boost for us.  The garden produces vegetables and honey which is available to the Hurst Farm community through the Farmer’s Larder Community Pantry and we know it is an essential resource for many people.  It’s also a space where people learn new skills and build social connections; along with plans for electricity for the shed we will be able to make our offer more accessible, providing essential amenities for those who already come along and get involved – including a warm cuppa! - and hopefully welcoming more.  Our wider project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Derbyshire Dales District Council; the ongoing support for the garden from Platform and Hardyman & Co is not just welcomed, it’s essential.”

Tracey Silk, our Community Engagement Officer said: “This project really shows the power of partnership.  Social value work like this helps us give back to the communities we serve, and it’s brilliant to see contractors and local groups working hand in hand to create lasting impact.  A big thank you to Hardyman & Co and to Wild Works for all their efforts.”

We are committed to adding social value wherever possible and working in partnership to help communities thrive.
