Our Community Chest is helping to serve up summer fun in Lichfield

A community group in Lichfield is set to bring neighbours together through a series of family picnics this summer, thanks to support from our Community Chest fund.
The St Johns Grange Community Group successfully applied for support through our Community Chest, a dedicated fund available to our customers, local charities, clubs and other not-for-profit organisations. The fund supports projects that directly benefit our customers, with all applications reviewed by members of our Customer Voice Panel against clear eligibility criteria.
The group – which is based on the St Johns Grange estate - has received the funds to host six weeks of summer holiday picnics in the local Whittle Street Park and other community events. The initiative – organised by our Community Representative Jane Francis – will provide free snacks and drinks to local children once a week throughout the school holidays, supporting around 30 children at each event.
The picnics are more than just a chance to enjoy a bite to eat, they’re about strengthening social connections and having fun.
Jane said: “We’re really proud of our growing community group and want to keep encouraging families to join us. These picnic days are about giving children and parents an opportunity to connect, relax and enjoy their local park without any cost barriers. It’s all about community spirit and making sure everyone feels part of it.”
The group has previously run well attended events such as Easter egg hunts and family races, regularly bringing together families from across the estate. With the help of the Community Chest, this year’s summer initiative will provide healthy snacks including fruit, cheese, juice and yogurts.
Tracey Silk, our Community Engagement Officer said: “This is a fantastic example of how grassroots community action can make a real impact. The team at St Johns Grange are incredibly proactive, always looking for ways to bring people together, and we’re delighted to support them again. Their events help break down social barriers, encourage inclusion and promote a real sense of belonging.”
The picnics will also feature games and activities, with organisers hoping the success of events like these will help build momentum for a future community space on the estate.
Our Community Chest offers grants of up to £5000 for customer led projects that promote inclusion, wellbeing and community connection.
