Young people in Worcester are set to benefit from free and low cost football opportunities this year thanks to a new initiative supported by our Community Chest fund.

Worcester City Youth Football Club applied to our Community Chest, a funding pot for our customers and local charities, clubs and other not-for-profit organisations for any projects directly benefitting our customers; all applications are assessed against specific eligibility criteria by customers who sit on our Customer Voice Panel.

The club – which already provides high quality football for more than 400 children across 34 youth teams – has received the grant to launch a new programme of pop up football sessions and a six week afterschool sports leadership scheme.

The project will take football directly into local parks, community spaces and schools in disadvantaged areas, helping to remove barriers such as cost, equipment or travel.  Sessions will be open to all abilities and led by qualified coaches, giving children aged 5 to 16 the chance to get active, learn new skills and boost their confidence.

Alongside developing teamwork and resilience, the programme aims to strengthen community ties and promote long term participation in sport, supporting both physical and mental wellbeing.

Hayley Tally from Worcester City Football Club said: “We’re passionate about making football accessible to every young person, no matter their background.  These new sessions will provide safe, inclusive opportunities for children to play, grown in confidence and feel part of their community.  The support from Platform’s Community Chest has made it possible for us to reach even more families and schools.”

The grant will fund coaching, essential equipment such as bibs, footballs and pop up goals as well as subsidising pitch hire costs to keep sessions affordable.

Paul Edwards, our Community Engagement Officer said: “This project is a brilliant example of how grassroots sports can create a big impact.  By tackling barriers to participation, it helps young people not only stay active but also build friendships, resilience and a sense of belonging.  We’re really proud to support Worcester City Football Club in expanding their outreach work.”
