Guide Dogs visit brings generations together in Broughton Astley
Residents and students in Broughton Astley recently came together for a special intergenerational event with a visit from Guide Dogs, offering a memorable and educational experience for all involved.
Residents at Arkwright House, one of our retirement living schemes, were joined by Year 9 students from Thomas Estley Community College for the session, which forms part of an ongoing intergenerational project bringing young people and residents together.
The group welcomed representatives from Guide Dogs for the Blind, alongside guide dog Tango, to learn more about the charity’s life changing work supporting people with sight loss to live independently, confidently and safely.
Attendees heard about the journey of a guide dog, from early socialisation with volunteer puppy raisers through to structured training and eventually supporting their owners in everyday life. The visit also offered the opportunity to see first hand how guide dogs and their handlers work together.
The event was enjoyed by both residents and students, with many taking the opportunity to meet Tango and learn more about the important role guide dogs play in people’s lives.
A total of £73.80 was raised on the day in support of Guide Dogs.
Bindya Mistry, our Community Engagement Officer said: “It was fantastic to bring residents and students together for such a meaningful and enjoyable session. The intergenerational project continues to build confidence, friendships and understanding between different age groups, and this visit from Guide Dogs made it even more special.”
“It was inspiring for everyone to learn about the incredible work the charity does and to see the impact these partnerships have on people’s lives.”
The intergenerational project between Arkwright House and Thomas Estley Community College continues to grow, providing opportunities for residents and young people to connect, learn from one another and support the wider community.
