Grant keeps Worcester’s ‘Golden Girls’ art group painting, knitting and connecting

A friendship group for older residents in Worcester has secured a financial boost from our Community Chest fund, ensuring its weekly creative get together can flourish for another year
The St Johns Golden Girls applied to our Community Chest, a funding pot for our customers and local charities, clubs and other not-for-profit organisations for any projects directly benefitting our customers; all applications are assessed against specific eligibility criteria by customers who sit on our Customer Voice Panel.
The group, based at Russell House in St Clements Close, began life when residents joined Royal Worcester pottery workshops organised by ourselves. The classes sparked new friendships and a passion for craft, leading the women – now numbering around 12, with room for more, including men – to meet every week for art, chat and mutual support.
The Community Chest grant will be provided as shop vouchers for local arts suppliers The Works and Hobbycraft, allowing the group to buy paints, yarn, paper, pottery blanks and other essentials as they are needed.
Valerie Mills, group organiser and one of our customers said: “Our weekly sessions are the highlight of many people’s week. We’ve made close friends, improved our dexterity and confidence and even produced stone painted pieces for charity. This funding means we can plan projects in advance and welcome new members without worrying about costs.”
Alongside personal projects, the Golden Girls intend to craft for good causes, from knitted hats for children’s wards to blankets for relief appeals. Spare materials will be stored securely in the scheme’s communal room.
Paul Edwards, our Community Engagement Officer said: “This is a brilliant example of community spirit. The Golden Girls tackle loneliness head on, boost wellbeing and show how creativity can unite a neighbourhood. We’re delighted the Community Chest can help them thrive.”
Our Community Chest offers grants of up to £5000 to customers, charities and not for profit groups whose projects benefit our residents by reducing isolation, improving mental health or enhancing local pride. Applications are judged quarterly by a panel of involved customers.
