Two dedicated volunteers who have helped hundreds of people build confidence online have been recognised with one of our Community Heroes Award.

Doug Lunn and Elaine Dean have been named winners of the Customer Involvement Award at the 2026 Community Heroes Awards, sponsored by AMP EV, in recognition of their outstanding commitment to supporting residents through digital inclusion initiatives across Lincolnshire.

The pair have become familiar faces at digital support sessions in Skegness and Trusthorpe, helping people navigate everything from mobile phones and laptops to online services, social tariffs and video calling.

Together, they have given their time, skills and expertise to help residents overcome digital barriers, tackle isolation and gain confidence using technology in an increasingly online world.

Their involvement began at Barratt Court in Skegness, where they supported residents taking their first steps online.  When formal support came to an end, Doug and Elaine stepped forward to continue helping residents themselves, ensuring vital digital support remained available within the community.

Today, they regularly volunteer at digital hubs attended by dozens of residents, providing one to one support and practical guidance to people who might otherwise struggle to access essential services, stay connected with loved ones or benefit from the opportunities technology can offer.

Doug Lunn said: “We never started doing this for recognition.  We do it because we genuinely want to help people.  Technology changes so quickly and it can be overwhelming, particularly for older people or those who haven’t had much experience using digital devices.

“If we can help someone feel more confident, connect with family, access services or simply solve a problem that’s been worrying them, then that’s what makes it worthwhile.  It’s wonderful to be recognised, but the real reward is seeing the difference it makes to people’s lives.”

Elaine Dean added: “Many people arrive feeling nervous or lacking confidence, but once they’ve learned something new and realised they’re capable of doing it themselves, it’s incredibly rewarding to see.

“Technology can open so many doors, and we’re proud to play a small part in helping people feel more connected, informed and independent.”

The award was presented by Marion Duffy, our Chief Operations Officer, who praised the pair’s commitment to supporting others.

She said: “Doug and Elaine are exceptional examples of what customer involvement is all about.  They give their time freely, share their knowledge generously and provide support that has a genuine and lasting impact on people’s lives.

“Digital inclusion is becoming increasingly important, and thanks to their patience, expertise and commitment, many residents have gained confidence online, stayed connected with loved ones and accessed services they may otherwise have struggled to reach.

“They are incredibly worthy winners of this award and we’re proud to recognise the difference they continue to make across our communities.”

The Customer Involvement Award celebrates individuals who actively help shape and strengthen their communities, supporting others and creating positive change through their dedication and commitment.

The category was sponsored by AMP EV; Alasdair Croft, Managing Director at AMP EV said: “We are delighted to support and sponsor the Platform Community Heroes Awards for 2026, which help recognise and acknowledge the truly brilliant and inspirational individuals who support others.  Congratulations to all the winners and we look forward to working with you all again in 2027.”

Our Community Heroes Awards celebrate the individuals, groups and organisations whose dedication helps communities thrive across the regions we serve.
