Community hero recognised for transforming lives through the Butterfly Foundation
Butterfly Foundation founder Sue Stevenson has been named the winner of our inaugural Celebrating Diversity Award 2026.
Sponsored by Gratton Construction Limited, the new award recognises individuals and organisations that champion inclusion, break down barriers and help create stronger, more connected communities.
Sue was presented with the award in recognition of her outstanding work through the Butterfly Foundation in Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, where she has created a safe, welcoming space for children, young people and families facing a wide range of challenges.
The Butterfly Foundation supports local children from birth to 18 and their families, providing emotional wellbeing support, guidance, activities and opportunities to build confidence and resilience. The project also works alongside NHS services and supports families experiencing isolation, loneliness and complex personal circumstances.
What began as Sue’s desire to help children and families she encountered through her role as a Cub Scout leader has grown into a thriving community project that now supports people of all ages.
The Butterfly Foundation offers after school activities, wellbeing support and a safe place where children can develop friendships, learn how to manage their emotions and feel part of a supportive community.
The project has become a multi generational community hub, bringing together children, parents, grandparents and volunteers in an environment where everyone is welcomed and valued.
Helen Gillett, Chair of our Board – and who presented the award to Sue - said: “Sue and the Butterfly Foundation are a fantastic example of what the Celebrating Diversity Award was created to recognise.
“Sue has built something truly special for children, young people and families in Mablethorpe. The Butterfly Foundation creates opportunities for people from all backgrounds to come together, access support and feel part of their community.
“Her compassion, dedication and commitment to helping others have made a lasting difference to countless lives and we are delighted to recognise both Sue and the Butterfly Foundation with this year’s award.”
Kirsty Howard, Director of Operations at Gratton Construction Limited, said: “Gratton Construction Limited is proud to support the Celebrating Diversity Award, recognising the individuals and groups who make a real difference in bringing communities together.
“We believe that inclusive, respectful environments are essential to strong and sustainable communities, and it is inspiring to celebrate those who champion diversity, break down barriers and ensure everyone feels valued and supported.
“Sue and the Butterfly Foundation embody everything this award represents and we are delighted to see them recognised.”
Accepting the award, Sue Stevenson said: “This recognition means so much but the Butterfly Foundation has never been about me. It’s about the children, families and volunteers who make this community so special.
“We created a safe place where people can come together, support one another and know they are not alone. To receive this award is a real honour and a reflection of everyone who has been part of our journey.”
During the surprise presentation, Sue was described as ‘the heartbeat of the community’ by those who have witnessed first hand the impact of her work.
Through the Butterfly Foundation, she has helped create opportunities for children to improve their emotional wellbeing, supported families through difficult times and built a welcoming environment where people feel connected and valued.
The Celebrating Diversity Award is one of our Community Heroes Awards, which recognise individuals, groups and organisations making a positive difference across the communities we serve.
