We have recognised a Nottinghamshire resident whose kindness, dedication and community spirit have made a lasting difference to the lives of those around him.

John Bonsall, known affectionately by many as ‘Little John’, has been named winner of our Going the Extra Mile Award at our 2026 Community Heroes Awards.

The award, sponsored by Hardyman & Co Ltd, celebrates individuals who consistently go above and beyond to support others and make a positive difference in their communities.

John, who lives at Epperstone Court, has become a much loved figure among fellow residents and the wider community.  He continues to dedicate his time to helping others, whether that’s maintaining communal gardens, supporting activities within his retirement living community, walking neighbours’ dogs, providing lifts to appointments, carrying out small repairs or volunteering with local charity The Arches.

Alongside his practical support, John also shares his musical talents, performing for residents, community groups and his local church.

John was nominated by Retirement Housing Officer Lorraine DeCosta, who wanted to recognise the countless ways he supports others, often without seeking any recognition himself.

Presenting the award was our Group Board Member Jane Porter.

John said: “I was completely surprised.  I never expected anything like this.  I just try to help where I can.  If someone needs support, whether that’s walking a dog, giving them a lift or helping with a repair, I’m happy to do it.  Keeping busy keeps me going and it’s wonderful to know that what I do is appreciated.”

Jane said: “John is a truly deserving winner of our Going the Extra Mile Award.  The difference he makes to the lives of people at Epperstone Court and within the wider community is remarkable.

“What stands out most is that John helps others simply because he cares.  His kindness, integrity and willingness to support those around him embody everything this award represents.  We are incredibly proud to recognise his contribution and thank him for everything he does.”

Lorraine DeCosta added that John’s impact extends far beyond the practical support he provides.  She said: “John goes above and beyond every single day.  He gives his time so generously and is always the first person to offer help when someone needs it.  He brings people together, creates a real sense of community and makes Epperstone Court a better place for everyone.  We are all incredibly proud of him.”

The Community Heroes Awards celebrates the individuals, groups and organisations that help our communities thrive by supporting neighbours, tackling isolation and creating stronger, more connected places to live.

Jason Bowen, Operations Director at Hardyman & Co Ltd said: Hardyman & Co Ltd is proud to support the Going the Extra Mile Award, which celebrates those who consistently exceed expectations and make a meaningful difference through their dedication and initiative.  Recognising individuals like John highlights the impact of going beyond what’s required and inspires others to do the same.”
