A new walking football initiative in Wirksworth will soon be helping local residents take positive steps towards better mental health, thanks to funding from our Community Chest.

The Mental Health Initiative – or MHI - applied to our Community Chest, a funding pot for our customers and local charities, clubs and other not-for-profit organisations for any projects directly benefitting our customers; all applications are assessed against specific eligibility criteria by customers who sit on our Customer Voice Panel.

The project has received funds to help launch a weekly football session at Wirksworth Leisure Centre, working alongside Wirksworth Colts FC.  The sessions aim to provide a safe, welcoming space for people to enjoy light exercise and build social connections, particularly benefiting those who may be struggling with their mental health or wellbeing.

The Community Chest grant will fund essential equipment such as footballs, cones, bibs and a first aid kit, as well as subsidise pitch hire costs, making the sessions as accessible as possible for those taking part.

Darren Greatorex, one of our customers and the Chair of MHI said: “Walking football is a great way to combine gentle physical activity with the mental health benefits of being outdoors, connecting with others and taking a break from life’s pressures.  We want this to be an hour where people feel supported, included and uplifted.  The backing from Platform has really helped us bring this to life.”

MHI has grown rapidly since launching last year, now boasting a network of nearly 500 local subscribers and a team of 16 volunteers trained in mental health support.  Their walking football project is the latest addition to a range of community based initiatives designed to promote mental wellbeing in Wirksworth and surrounding areas.

Tracey Silk, our Community Engagement Officer said: “We’re proud to support such a proactive and passionate group.  It’s fantastic to see one of our customers driving this forward and making a real difference in the community.”

We own and manage around 260 homes in Wirksworth and support a wide range of wellbeing focused projects through our Community Chest fund.
