A new community initiative in Birmingham tackled isolation among older residents thanks to a grant from our Community Chest.

The Friends of Stechford Green Spaces group applied to our Community Chest, a funding pot for our customers and local charities, clubs and other not-for-profit organisations for any projects directly benefitting our customers; all applications are assessed against specific eligibility criteria by customers who sit on our Customer Voice Panel.

The group was awarded the funds to host an afternoon tea and tabletop games event for elderly residents in the local area.  The project brought together up to 45 participants – including some of our customers – for a relaxing and sociable afternoon on Stechford Village Green.

The event – which took place earlier this month – offered guests the chance to enjoy refreshments, socialise with neighbours and take part in light activities designed to build connections and improve wellbeing.  A marquee, tables and chairs were hired and a taxi service was provided to remove accessibility barriers for those with mobility issues.

Yvette John, Chair of Friends of Stechford Green Spaces said: “We’ve had fantastic feedback from the community who told us they wanted more activities for older residents.  This event gave people a chance to enjoy themselves in a friendly, inclusive space.  For many, it was a rare chance to get out and meet others, something we know is so important for mental and emotional health.”

The project built on the group’s previous successful activities, including a community planting day and a family Easter egg hunt.

Deborah Jones, our Community Engagement Officer said: “This is a wonderful example of how small grants can make a big difference.  Events like this help people feel more connected to their neighbourhoods and supported by their communities.”

Our Community Chest is open to local residents and organisations who want to make a positive impact where they live.  The fund supports initiatives that promote wellbeing, strengthen community bonds and create more vibrant, inclusive neighbourhoods.
