Community Chest funding helps Birmingham residents grow award winning garden project
Residents at Colbourne Court in Birmingham are set to build on the success of their award winning community garden thanks to support from our Community Chest fund.
The Colbourne Court residents’ group has been awarded the funds to enhance its outdoor planting project, helping residents create an even greener and more environmentally friendly outdoor space for everyone to enjoy.
The funding will be used to install five rainwater collection butts, purchase new perennial plants, refresh existing planting displays and deliver another community hanging basket workshop following the success of last year’s project.
The initiative builds on previous Community Chest funding, which helped transform the communal gardens and outdoor areas at the retirement living scheme. Residents’ efforts were recognised with an Outstanding award from the Royal Horticultural Society's community gardening scheme.
The latest improvements will help make watering plants more sustainable during the summer months while encouraging residents to come together, develop friendships and take pride in their shared environment.
Gaynor Steele, Coordinator of the Colbourne Court residents’ group said: “The garden has become a real focal point for residents and has helped bring people together in a way we never imagined. Many residents have enjoyed getting involved, whether that’s helping with planting, attending the hanging basket workshops or simply spending time in the outdoor spaces.
“Winning recognition for our efforts last year was a huge achievement and we’re keen to build on that success. The water butts will help us look after the garden in a more environmentally friendly way and the new planting will keep the space looking vibrant and welcoming for everyone who lives here.
“We’re extremely grateful to Platform Housing Group for continuing to support projects that make such a positive difference to our community.”
The project is expected to benefit all residents at Colbourne Court by creating opportunities for social interaction, promoting community pride and supporting local biodiversity.
Debbie Jones, our Community Engagement Officer said: “It’s wonderful to see how previous Community Chest funding has helped residents transform their outdoor spaces and create something they can all be proud of. The success of the project and the recognition it received through the RHS award demonstrates the dedication and enthusiasm of everyone involved.
“This latest funding will help residents continue that journey by making the garden more sustainable and ensuring it remains a welcoming place where people can connect with neighbours, enjoy nature and spend time outdoors together. Projects like this show how small investments can have a lasting impact on wellbeing and community spirit.”
Our Community Chest fund supports local groups and organisations delivering projects that strengthen communities, improve wellbeing and create opportunities for residents across the areas where we operate.
The latest improvements are expected to be completed during the summer, allowing residents to enjoy another colourful growing season together.
