A new home, a fresh start
After spending 18 years serving in the British Army, Leigh was looking for more than just a new house – he needed a place where he could feel safe, settled and at home.
Following his move to Oakham, Leigh was living in privately rented accommodation where ongoing anti-social behaviour, noise and police incidents were having a significant impact on his wellbeing, exacerbating his complex PTSD and affecting his sleep and daily life.
When Platform's new Brooke Road development became available, Leigh successfully applied for a two-bedroom affordable rent home. The development, delivered in partnership with Burmor Construction, provides 40 high-quality new homes, including 28 affordable rent and 12 shared ownership properties, helping more people access homes they can afford.
Today, Leigh enjoys living in a peaceful neighbourhood close to the town centre, transport links and his family. Having a two-bedroom home also means his daughter can live with him.
"It's a peaceful, friendly neighbourhood in a good location near to amenities, just a five-minute walk into town, near to the train station and close to all major roads that help me with getting to work. The house is spacious and provides me with a home I am pleased to live in."
Leigh now works as a service engineer across the East Midlands and has become part of his local church and wider community. He says having a safe and settled home has made a real difference to his mental health and wellbeing, giving him the stability he needs to move forward with confidence.
Reflecting on his move, Leigh also praised the support he received throughout the process, saying Platform kept him informed at every stage and communicated openly when there was a slight delay before he moved into his new home.
