We have been recognised in an international environmental award for our low carbon fleet transformation
We have been recognised in the prestigious Commonwealth Environment & CSR Awards 2026 for our ambitious programme to reduce carbon emissions by transforming our vehicle fleet.
The Group’s project, ‘A Fleet Fit for the Future’, won Gold at the awards ceremony in Glasgow on 31 July.
The recognition celebrates our work to decarbonise one of the largest operational fleets in the housing sector, reducing carbon emissions while delivering significant financial savings and improving services for customers.
Over the past year, we have saved more than 900 tonnes of carbon dioxide through a combination of electric vehicle adoption and safer, more efficient driving. The initiative has also reduced fuel costs by more than £300,000, helping us reinvest resources into frontline services.
We have installed charging infrastructure across our offices and colleagues’ homes, introduced more than 100 electric and plug in hybrid vehicles into our fleet and implemented driver technology that rewards safe and fuel efficient driving.
The programme forms part of our wider sustainability strategy and our commitment to achieving net zero operational emissions.
Lianne Taylor, our Director of Sustainability said: “We’re delighted that our fleet transformation has been recognised on an international stage. While our biggest environmental impacts come from our homes and supply chain, we knew our operational fleet presented a real opportunity to reduce carbon emissions while improving efficiency and delivering better value.”
Matthew Neale, our Head of Fleet said: “This project has been about much more than replacing vehicles. It’s involved investing in charging infrastructure, working closely with colleagues to support the transition and taking a strategic approach to ensure electric vehicles work in the real world for our operatives and our customers.
“The results speak for themselves. We’ve reduced emissions, lowered fuel costs, improved reliability and created a model that other organisations are already looking to learn from. It’s a fantastic achievement for everyone involved.”
We currently manages a fleet of around 700 vehicles supporting repairs, maintenance and housing services across the Midlands.
We aim to transition to a fully electric fleet by 2035 as part of our wider commitment to creating sustainable homes and thriving communities.
The Commonwealth Environment & CSR Awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent environmental charity that recognises environmental best practice and corporate social responsibility around the world.
