Take a seat: new community hub brings Shard End neighbours together
Residents in Gilling Grove, Shard End, now have a new place to sit, socialise and enjoy the outdoors, thanks to a grant from our Community Chest Fund.
The funding has been used to install a sturdy three seat bench on the central island within the Birmingham cul de sac, alongside two large planters making the space more attractive and welcoming.
The bench provides an accessible resting place for older residents and people with mobility difficulties, while creating a natural meeting point where neighbours can spend time together and build new connections.
Property Care, our in house maintenance company, installed and secured the bench free of charge. Residents are now helping to look after the bench, planters and surrounding area.
The idea was put forward by customer and long standing Gilling Grove resident Jean Painter.
Jean said: "I have lived at Gilling Grove for many years and felt that the central island could become somewhere that brings our community together.
"The bench gives neighbours a place to stop, talk and look out for one another. It is particularly valuable for people who live alone, do not get out very often or find walking difficult.
"The planters make the island look much more welcoming. It may seem like a simple idea, but it means a great deal to the people who live here. We are over the moon to see it in place."
Before the application was submitted, our Community Engagement Officer Debbie Jones consulted residents to ensure there was local support for the proposal.
Residents said the space could help bring people together over tea and cake, reduce loneliness and give people from different backgrounds opportunities to meet. It could also help residents experiencing bereavement, those living with health conditions and neighbours who face language barriers to feel more connected.
Debbie said: "When Jean approached me, it was clear that she had identified a simple idea with the potential to make a real difference.
"The response to the consultation was fantastic. Residents told us the bench could help people come together, reduce isolation and create a stronger sense of community, while the planters will bring some additional colour and pride to the area.
"This is exactly what Platform's Community Chest Fund is about, supporting customer led ideas that respond to local needs and help communities thrive. We are delighted to help the residents of Gilling Grove turn their idea into reality."
Our Community Chest supports local organisations and projects which help improve the lives of customers and communities across the Midlands.
