Volunteers and colleagues gathered together recently for the regular monthly tidy up at the Newtown Green Community Orchard – affectionately known as ‘Trev’s Orchard’ - celebrating community pride, seasonal growth and three years of fruitful dedication.

Thanks to a sunny spring, the orchard is on track for a bumper harvest this year.  Apples, pears, plums and soft fruits are ripening in abundance, making the green space a welcome resource for local people to enjoy and share.

Established three years ago by the Newtown Green Group on land owned by Worcester City Council, the orchard has always been a true community collaboration.  We have supported the initiative since the beginning, with one of our colleagues, Community Engagement Officer Paul Edwards, being the longest standing member of the group.

The orchard was renamed ‘Trev’s Orchard’ in memory of much loved volunteer Trevor Hughes, who sadly passed away.  His widow remains an active and valued part of the project.

Around a dozen volunteers regularly attend the monthly maintenance sessions, which involve light gardening and litter picking to keep the orchard accessible, attractive and flourishing.  The produce is shared with the local community on a first come, first served basis, in line with the group’s open and welcoming ethos.

Paul said: “We’re incredibly proud to support Trev’s Orchard; it’s a fantastic example of what communities can achieve when they come together around a shared space.  It’s about food, yes, but it’s also about friendship, wellbeing and pride in the local area.”

This latest event at the orchard was part of our Communities Connected initiative, confirming its ongoing commitment to community cohesion, wellbeing and engagement.  Further events are planned throughout the year, continuing to foster pride of place and meaningful partnerships with residents and local organisations.
