Community Chest grant writes next chapter for Broughton Astley reading group
A popular reading group that has helped people form friendships and overcome loneliness has secured funding to continue meeting for another year.
Friendly Readers Broughton Astley has received funding from our Community Chest Fund, covering the cost of its monthly meetings at Broughton Astley Village Hall for 12 months.
Volunteer host Keeley Barnett established the group online six years ago to help people stay connected during the Covid 1 lockdown. It has since grown into a thriving community with 299 online members and more than 25 people regularly attending its monthly meetings.
Bringing together people aged from 25 to 80, the group provides a friendly and inclusive environment in which residents can discover different books, enjoy lively conversations and develop lasting friendships.
It has also encouraged people who had not read regularly for many years to rediscover books, while helping members develop their confidence and feel more comfortable contributing to group discussions.
Keeley said: "What began as an online group during lockdown has grown into a wonderful community of people who enjoy reading, sharing ideas and spending time together.
"The books give us something to talk about, but the friendships and connections people have made are equally important. We have seen members grow in confidence, speak up during meetings and begin socialising together outside the group.
"We are very grateful to Platform Housing Group for this funding. Having our room hire covered for the next year gives the group security and allows us to continue welcoming new members."
The grant will fund a two hour session at the village hall each month. Refreshments and book ordering costs will continue to be covered by the group itself.
The group hopes to reach more people who may be experiencing loneliness or isolation.
Bindya Mistry, our Community Engagement Officer said: "Friendly Readers is a fantastic example of how a shared interest can bring people together and create a genuine sense of belonging.
"The group supports literacy and learning but its impact goes much further. It provides regular social contact, strengthens confidence and gives people of different ages and backgrounds an opportunity to build meaningful friendships.
"We are delighted that our Community Chest Fund will help secure the group's meeting place for another year. We will also be promoting it among Platform customers in Broughton Astley so that even more local people can become involved."
Our Community Chest Fund supports projects that make a positive difference to our customers and the communities in which they live.
