Be aware: Winter Fuel Payments Scam Text Messages

Some people have been getting fake text messages about Winter Fuel Payments.
These messages pretend to be from the Government or HMRC, and they invite you to apply for a new Winter Fuel payment.
This is a scam.
You do not need to apply for the Winter Fuel Payment. If you qualify, the payment will be sent to you automatically.
If you get one of these messages:
- Don’t click on any links
- Don’t give your personal or bank details
- Forward the text to 7726 – this is free and tells your mobile phone provider about the scam
- Delete the message
Why it’s important to report scams
HMRC is working hard to stop these scams. In June 2025 alone, they received around 15,100 reports about Winter Fuel Payment scams, and they have already removed thousands of fake websites.
If you get a suspicious message, you can help report it by:
- Text message – forward it to 7726
- Email – forward it to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk
- Website link – report it on the GOV.UK suspicious emails and scams page
Please share this warning with friends, family, and neighbours – especially those who might be more at risk. The more people are aware of these scams, the harder it will be for fraudsters to succeed.
If you’re worried or unsure if a message is real, visit the official Winter Fuel Payment page on GOV.UK for more information.
